Drag Strip Tips

ü      Remove as much weight as possible

o       Spare tire, jack, tool kit

o       Empty glove box

o       Anything not bolted down

o       Click here for a comprehensive list

ü      Take only as much gas as you need

ü      Turn off the AC and Radio

ü      Let car cool between runs with the hood up (30 minutes, pros do it)

ü      Take the Intake Manifold cover off for better cooling

ü      Tire Pressure:  max in the front, backs needs some testing but try 25 lbs and see how it does (remember to get them back to normal)

ü      In most cases, one should not use the water box, if you are launching with a RPM of 1,500 to 2,000 and are getting excessive tire spin you may want to consider using the water box.  To use the water box, put your car in second gear (stick) get in the box and floor it for about a second or two.  This should heat up the tires and give you better traction.

ü      As soon as you see the bottom yellow light go on, go!

ü      Make sure you keep the accelerator down all the way through the trap at the other end and not the first set of lights or lines.

Performance "Rules of Thumb"

     1)  Temperature:  for +/- 10.5 degrees temperature change, you get a 1.5% change in HP

     2)  Pounds:  for every +/- 100 lbs you get an equivalent +/- 7 HP

     3)  HP=>ET:  An increase of 10 HP will reduce your ET by .15 seconds

     4)  Altitude: for every increase of elevation +/- 1,000 ft. you get +/- 4% change in HP

     5)  HP loss through transmission:  Automatic 20%, Standard 15%
